Tiny Little Holes
03:55
|
|||
Maybe you've fallen out of form
You'd stay awake and let the words keep you warm.
At the dawning of the day,
Take out your paddles and row the other way.
Soft shadows cast off into view
Clear pond reflected by a warm summer moon
And at the sinking of the door
Go back upstairs and lay your body on the floor.
Why'd you go searching for those songs?
Nights they'd forgotten
When the raindrops kept up with the bombs.
Some snow had fallen in the streets,
Some snow had fallen between newly parted sheets.
Let follow you, let follow me,
Let something whistle and be smothered by the sea.
Back home, the water's all run cold.
Ma, I swear, this house has never felt so old.
Brought in the kindling with the wood.
Ma, I swear, I ain't never felt so good.
O brother, brother, carry me.
I've been struck blind
And deaf, I cannot hear, I cannot see.
Maybe if all roads lead to one,
I'll find a place where I can stretch out in the sun.
And with a heavy-weighted soul,
I could remember all those tiny little holes.

Pencil Lead

You rolled into my backyard last night
I sat and watched, the sun shining in my eyes.
I stood alone and tried to act surprised.
I went back home and washed my hands.
When I come home I can kick off my shoes
I can sit by the fire and warm my toes.
And ask my doctor how long ago
We sat and smoked between the wooded rows
Some tiny island where the thunder goes
My little heart was in your hands.
Sunburned shoulders; I was out for hours
I sat on the edge of the pond and watched the wind,
And waited there til I could feel the end begin.
And I could watch the wind all day,
Not letting any single word away,
And everything I saw was green.
I imagine one day I may wake up
To find a note beside my bed
With little dots and big black letters in pencil lead.
I didn't speak her language,
You left your words where they would find me dead.

Goin' down to the race track, see my horse out the gate
Goin' down to the race track, see my horse out the gate.
You'd better stay behind, I don't know how long I'm gonna have to wait.
There's rain on the highway, cartwheels stuck in the road
There's rain on the highway, cartwheels stuck in the road.
When that nag gets to movin' I tell ya she's a sight to behold.
She moves so graceful, like a top-heavy motorcar
She moves so graceful, like a top-heavy motorcar.
Everybody always told me on my own I'll only get so far.
If my horse gets too weary, they'll all say I told you so
If my horse gets too weary, they'll all say I told you so
'Fore the rain starts to fallin', I imagine I'll get up and go.
If I get down to Mississippi, I'll be sure to mention your name
If I get down to Mississippi, I'll be sure to mention your name.
He'll put his arm around me and say "boy I'm sure you ain't to blame".

Bending Down
03:16
|
|||
The echoes you heard above the ocean
Are lost beneath the waves
For days and for more.
And the night-wind laps against the body
Of a tired, wretched thing
That I bring to your shore.
And you know that I've been here before,
But it's changed and now I can't find the door
Anymore.
Once, when our room felt like Eden,
And I fell like a tree
With no fruit and no leaves,
And the sunshine, oh the unforgiving daytime;
I begged the river, please,
In the sand on my knees.
And the moon rose high above the bridge that night.
And I bent down to hear from her that it's alright,
Just the night.
On Sunday, my ship was dragged to surface;
Not all of it was gone.
I lived on and on.
And later, when all the clouds were crying,
I leaned against the sun
And lived on and on.

Willem Dafoe

|

Hey, watch the shadows, girl
When the going's tough,
You can see him twirl;
I could see you there,
We all could see you there,
Combing his hair.
See, multiply the light,
Add a breath or two,
Track him through the night,
Have a couple more,
Just like you before
There was a second floor.
Now, as you plainly see,
Something's gone amiss,
Not the death of me;
With unearthly glow,
The fatal one to go,
Willem Dafoe.
Willem Dafoe.
Oh, Willem Dafoe.

Wilt

Consider in moments too awful to spare
Consider in moments too awful to spare
The weight of the water
And the weight of the air.
If we could return to that room
If we could return to that room
I'd ask not to leave you
By the light of no moon.
Gone beyond you for now
Gone beyond you for now
A trick of the sunlight,
I'll get there somehow.
In time, by the grace of the air
In time, by the grace of the air
My grey sky will open
And you will be there.

Uneven Tide
03:26
|
|||
Sit by the window
Let the sunlight turn another page
Block out the feelings
Which seem to come along with age
With age,
Come along with age.
Block out the feelings which seem to come with age.
Hang on the wall,
Let the paint dry around your shoulders.
Show what you're made of
And show where you've been.
Wait in the sky
Where the orange light turns you over
Wait in the tall grass,
I think I see the way.
The way,
I think I see the way.
Wait in the tall grass, 'cause I think I see the way.
What are you saying
When you say you think you've said too much?
Is it a conscious thing
Or something in your mind?
One more for idle hands
And one for crooked feet;
Come on the morning song,
Come on uneven tide.
Oh, come on uneven tide.
Come on the morning song, come on uneven tide.

What do we do when there's nothing left to say?
How do we move our heads this time around?
What do we do when skies are blue
But in our heads hang clouds of grey?
When do the flowers tear apart the ground?
Save for the windows, which see as much as you or I,
No one watched the thunder as it struck.
Rhythm, rain, and back again,
Spoke, denounced by this blind eye
Felt another drop land in your cup.
Where did the sea go? Which carried off these open palms;
Why do you always like to say that word?
And so where did we go?
The time the sun burned on our arms?
You were reciting lines I'd never heard.

Standing on a by-road, waiting for the sky
Standing on a by-road, waiting for the sky.
I've been waiting so long
I wonder if it passed me by?
Some in the sunlight, never gonna see again
Some in the sunlight, never gonna see again
Out here in snow country,
Never gonna see me again.
Even in the summer, even in the August heat
Even in the summer, even in the August heat
I can still feel my snow country,
Feel it in my hands and feet.
Standing in the river, water come up to my knees.
Standing here in the river, water come up to my knees.
The sun casts a shadow,
I'm never leaving snow country.
